Fans will always argue over who the better 'Spider-Man' is between Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. Nonetheless, although he isn't cast nearly as much these days, Tobey Maguire endured quite the career, with several box office bombs along the way.

However, as we've seen with so many other stars in Hollywood, problems can take place behind the scenes. That was the case for Tobey Maguire during 'Spider-Man', as he dated Kirsten Dunst during the first film. Not only did the relationship make the director sweat, but it also caused tension with a certain cast member, who would also later reveal that like in the film, he also crushed on Dunst.

We'll take a look back at what went on behind the scenes and how tension was finally resolved between the two sides.

Both James Franco And Tobey Maguire Weren't Pleased With Their Auditions For 'Spider-Man'

Although the films ended up being legendary while making billions combined at the box office, the road to the film, especially the first one was a little bumpier.

Starting with James Franco, he had actually auditioned for the role of Peter Parker at the start. He nervously awaited the response thinking he got the role but ultimately, he was offered another role, as he revealed alongside Paly Voice.

"Well, I first auditioned for the role of Peter Parker, which went well,” the “Interview” actor said. “So they spent a lot of money on the sets and cranes, which is unusual for an audition. So I went and did that and was waiting around and biting my nail for six weeks.”

He didn't get the role but was later offered the part of Harry instead, one that nobody had auditioned for. He was given the role and as for Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire eventually scored the role.

Tobey wasn't necessarily thrilled about the audition process either, as he needed to try out for the role. He admitted his ego took a hit, however, it all worked out in the end.

Although the films ultimately thrived, it seems as though things were tense behind the scenes.

Tobey Maguire And Kirsten Dunst Were Secretly Dating During The First 'Spider-Man'

The two kept things extremely quiet, so much so that the film's director Sam Raimi wasn't even aware of their situation. However, he would become worried about their status, when it was revealed that the two had broken up prior to the second film.

"They apparently began dating with each other, I think, in the middle of the first movie ... although I didn't know it at the time," he added. "But definitely they eventually broke up before the second movie. I was concerned they wouldn't get the same chemistry back, but it was just me worrying."

Adding to the drama of it all, James Franco would later reveal after the films that he crushed on Dunst while she dated Tobey Maguire.

This created lots of tension on-set, though, by the time the second film rolled around, it is said that things were finally resolved by all sides.

Nonetheless, when looking back, Franco doesn't have the best memories of his time on-set.

James Franco And Tobey Maguire Weren't Pleased With One Another Given That The Canceled Actor Also Crushed On Kirsten Dunst... Like In The Film

During an interview alongside Playboy, Franco did in fact reveal that he crushed on his co-star during the making of the film, which caused drama and beef between himself and Maguire.

"Tobey and Kirsten became a couple around that time," he said. "I had a crush on Kirsten, and I think I was upset about that as well ... Tobey was mad at me for a while. By the second film, we were cool."

Looking back, although Franco worked things out with his co-stars, he wasn't all that pleased with the experience. The star would reveal alongside The Hollywood Reporter that he did a series of films that he didn't like or cared about, just because he was forced into them by his people. Franco would state that from that point on, he stopped listening to others and did his own thing.

Clearly, looking at his resume, it became obvious that Franco was referencing his time in the Spider-Man films. Though it should be noted that he had nothing but praise for his co-stars, including Tobey and Kirsten. It seems as though James just wasn't a fan of the process as a whole, especially creatively.
